Dr. Luis A. Santiago grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical science and engineering. While working as an engineer for the consumer product industry, he had the opportunity to volunteer at a local pediatric hospital. His life was deeply touched by the physical and emotional transformation of children who underwent reconstructive surgery for congenital malformations. This valuable experience led him to pursue a career in medicine, for he wished to improve people’s health and quality of life. Dr. Santiago received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, where he graduated with high honors. He completed his general surgery training at Hospital Episcopal San Lucas in southern Puerto Rico, where he was recognized for his excellent role as chief resident. Moreover, he is devoted to academic surgery as evidenced by his completion of two postdoctoral research fellowships and by his participation in surgical education. He is also a published author in peer-reviewed journals. Most notably, he believes strongly in medical philanthropy and actively participates in two non-governmental organizations that provide surgical services to underserved countries. Dr. Santiago is a sensible, highly competent and goal-oriented surgeon, who is above all committed to patient education, safety and excellence in surgical care.
